CHAPTER NINE

Roman

It takes some time before I feel her finally relax against me. Probably not easy after what I just said to her.

But I meant it.

If my wife thinks she’ll ever be free of me, she’s got another thing coming.

Still, sleep doesn’t come to me. I lie awake, staring up at the ceiling. She’s hiding something from me. I have no doubt about it. But whether it’s the fact that she’s the wolf in our midst, or something else, I can’t yet determine.

It doesn’t help that every time I confront her, our attraction takes over.

You’re stronger than this, Vassiliev.

Yet, I’m still torn by this sense of unease as the Sun finally rises. It kisses her naked skin with gold light and I’m torn between fucking her once more, and shaking the truth from her.

I get up, leaving her sleeping. Tousle-haired and too fucking beautiful. It’s the fucking siren song that leads a man to his death. I turn away from her, tugging my pants on, then on impulse, I pick up her phone from the bedside table and pad out of the room.

Though it’s barely dawn, there is a team working in the security room when I arrive there. Banks of screens flicker with images as the men scroll through hours of footage, seeking some small clue that we may have missed earlier. From the empty coffee mugs littering the desks in the room, they’ve been here for hours. And their grim expressions leave me certain they’ve found nothing.

“Viktor gone?” I ask. One of the men looks up and nods. I recognize my IT specialist, a kid called Byron who seems barely more than a teenager.

“He left an hour ago, Mr. Vassliev,” he says. “He’ll be back after breakfast.”

I nod, because I know how useless it is to try to focus past the point of exhaustion. And knowing my man, he’ll have pushed himself to the limit.

“What have you got?”

“So far, not much.” His brow furrows. “Just the regular comings and goings during the past few days. Our men on patrol. Some deliveries. Mrs. Vassiliev Senior taking her usual walks in the garden. Your wife and Miss Katya.”

I watch as he points to the screens where several frames have been frozen, probably for closer inspection. I squint at them hard, waiting for something to jump out at me. Nothing does. Unless Naomi found a way to plant that device using Katya as a shield, she’s simply been exploring the grounds with my niece. It doesn’t seem that she’s up to anything at all out there. Dammit. Because after catching her snooping around in my office, I should be on high alert. And yet I keep looking for reasons to believe she’s not guilty of anything.

Maybe you just don’t want to see it, Roman.

Abruptly I turn back to Byron, depositing Naomi’s phone on the table beside him.

“I need you to see what you can find on this,” I tell him. He picks it up and examines it, nodding thoughtfully.

“Should be easy,” he says, running a thumb over the screen.
